About FIAT
The Fishing Industry Association of Tonga (FIAT) is the result of a revolutionary process that has taken 12 years.
Founded in July of 1996, FIAT was then Tonga Export Fisheries Association (TEFA). Main objectives behind this formation were to promote and protect the interest of the industry, in particular its members and to represent this interest to government and other relevant bodies.
Throughout the years as the industry adapted to the dynamics of global conditions the association evolved to what it is today. FIAT now stands strongly to represent the fishing industry in Tonga at all levels and to "promote sustainable use of our marine resources".
The fishing industry in Tonga from its infancy has struggled through many external factors and proves to be an environment that brings out the fittest of industry players, creating a huge role for the association to play; as a voice of advocacy for its members and a developmental support mechanism that endeavors to be an economic driver.
FIAT works towards a vision of a sustainable, dynamic, equitable, accountable and well informed fishing industry with a mission for FIAT to be the leading vehicle for private sector development.
As it is stipulated in FIAT’s Strategic Development Plan for Economic Growth, one of its goals is "to improve public’s understanding and gain their support of the fishing industry" – this website aims at centralising the growing body of information that is the association.
